About

This website is managed completely by MFASO Hunter students and is not an official Hunter College site.

MFASO is the Student Organization of the MFA program at Hunter College. Our main goal is community building and the improvement of Hunter’s MFA program. We organize Hunter Open Studios, silent auction, the visiting artist lecture series, events and open forums. We raise money and write grants, which we use to buy more equipment, ads for our events, and to pay visiting artists. The four officers of MFASO are merely facilitators. MFASO is only as productive as our entire community of over 150 students.

We have full student meetings 4-6 times a semester to plan events, discuss problems, new ideas, etc. Check the calendar for dates and times.

There is a MFASO yahoo group service on which you can post and receive student related information. This list serve keeps everyone connected with postings of everything from places for rent, openings, parties, etc, and of course most importantly MFASO meetings. The address is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mfastudentorg/

To join send a blank email to:
mfastudentorg-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

MFASO communicates important info to students through its email list. This list is different from the official art department list. You should begin to receive emails from mfastudentorg@yahoo.com early in the semester.

There are bulletin boards throughout the studio building. MFASO will post information on these as well. They are also available for your use.

$25 STUDIO FEES
MFASO has a budget we piece together from many sources, such as Graduate School Association Club Allocations, AEB Grants, Fundraisers like the Silent Auction, and your mandatory studio fee of $25 a semester. It is your studio fees that make everything possible: 41st Street Lectures, guest artist studio visits, replacement/repairs of equipment, postcards for open studio, advertisements in the press, and this website.

After you pay your fee you are allowed to check out equipment, attend MFASO events, parties, and lectures, and are eligible to receive studio visits from visiting artists. MFASO will also advertise for you at open studios and offer you a link on the MFASO website. Those who fail to pay will not be granted access to any of these things until the fee is paid.

Volunteering
Because much of the Hunter MFA program is student-run, it is essential that everyone participate. Of course all of us would prefer to be locked in our studios, toiling away, our delusions of grandeur protected by a bubble of isolation. However, the Hunter experience involves community. And once the social anxiety has dissipated you will find that your peers have a lot of offer. Not only are we brilliant, talented, hilarious, and might I add startlingly attractive; we are your future. In ten years Sue So-and-so might want to include you in a solo show curated by her husband Billy Bob. Perhaps your friendship with Sue began over a can of beer whilst you were volunteering at Silent Auction. Hence Volunteering is a great way to meet people. It is fun and nearly painless!

There are many ways that you can make a contribution, take advantage of opportunities to volunteer at the upcoming MFASO meetings.
