Hunter MFASO

Chris Knox is a New Zealand independent artist who is probably better known by his association with the Tall Dwarves, a lo-fi DIY band. Knox’s solo music continues with the lo-fi production. His songs are often affecting and intelligent ruminations on mortality, sex, and society, produced with peculiar textures, a lyrical wit, and sincerity rarely expressed in contemporary music. His work  has had a great influence in the American indie scene– in particular Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Elephant Six Collective cite him as a major influence. In fact, Knox recently suffered a stroke and in a rare appearance, Jeff Magnum of Nuetral Milk Hotel, came out from his self-imposed retirement to contribute a track to the album.

Call for submissions closes March 9th at 12 Midnight!

We are opening up the call for Open Studios advertising early this semester, so that everyone will have the opportunity to contribute to the process and fully vet the final image. We will first offer an opportunity for the submission of images, which will happen online. Next, there will be an online vote. From that vote the top three images will go into a run-off vote that will then be decided in person by the student body at the next MFASO meeting. The image chosen in that meeting will be used throughout our ad campaign. If you have any questions about submitting or the process, feel free to mail us mfa.hunter@gmail.com

Open Studios advertising represents Hunter College’s MFA program to the rest of the art world, so please produce submissions that you feel best reflects the commitment you, the students, have to your practice as artists.  As many of you know, this year we are largely focused on electronic advertising, but we will also be printing a limited number of post cards. To submit simply follow the requirements below and append your image to a comment on this post.

Requirements: You must be a current Hunter MFA student. You must also have paid your MFASO dues. You may submit as many images as you like, but you must submit using your real name and email. Please submit images only– unless text is vital to your concept– event information will be added after the image is chosen. No explicit nudity or language (we have to keep things to our advertiser’s standards). For web submission please use JPG format at 72 DPI and no larger than 600 pixels in any direction . All final images submitted must be able to accommodate printing. Printing requirements are:

This week I am continuing with the Franco-phile mood of the last post and bringing you the music of French pop songstress France Gall. Gall worked with the now legendary Serge Gainsbourg to produce many of the tracks on the album Baby Pop…. From Wikipedia:

At the beginning of 1966 Gall released Baby pop, another song written by Gainsbourg, the lyrics of which Gall once described as “brutal”, but whose dark undertones are not easily perceived when one hears the song as sung by the then 18 year-old girl. However, the undertones in her next hit song were not so easily missed, and caused a scandal when it was released. Gainsbourg deliberately filled the song Les Sucettes(“Lollipops”) with double-meanings and strong sexual innuendo. On the surface, the lyrics tell the innocent tale of a girl named Annie who enjoys lollipops. However, it is clear that Gainsbourg intentionally created the theme as a metaphor for oral sex. Although a big hit, the song sat in stark contrast to genuinely innocent songs on the same album such as Je me marie en blanc (“White Wedding”) and Ça me fait rire (“It makes me laugh”).

Hey kids, for our first feature we actually have a compilation of rare French new wave from 79-85. Bippp French New Wave  carries a strong Krautrock influence, but filtered through a French pop-sensibility. Particularly interesting are Ping Pong by Act, and Pretty Day by Marie Moor. Aught’s fashionistas Ladytron could have easily swiped any number of tracks from this stylish collection of rare French dance and new wave.

Here on MFASO Blog I will be posting an occasional, probably weekly, list of shows that I’ve accumulated from some of the various news outlets (NYT, eflux, Artforum, etc.). If you see a stellar exhibition, feel free to send the information my way and I’ll look into adding it.

Here’s some introductory info:

1. The list is organized by geographic area so that you could take a day trip to see a group of these.

2. I add shows to the list as they appear and then remove them after I visit them. So, sometimes there will be repeats and some will disappear based on my personal viewing.

3. I usually make the rounds on Fridays and Saturdays. Feel free to contact me if you’d like to see where I’ll be on these days and join me.

4. This list is not meant to be comprehensive to what is happening in NYC but a personal selection of shows that I am interested in.  And again, I remove shows once I see them so you may want to scan previous lists.
