MFA Building/NYFD

Burning Cube by Jeppe HeinAs many of you are aware from the messages on the list serve, the New York Fire Department has vacated a number of studio spaces in the building, and we are currently in the process of bringing the building in compliance with the NYFD, creating new studio space, and relocating the displaced students. MFASO has been working with Hunter Faculty, Administration, and the NYFD to see that this problem is resolved as quickly as possible.

MFASO would like to thank the many volunteers who gathered together this week to help clear out refuse and clutter in the hallways and studios around the building. Your help was greatly appreciated and made a huge difference! The Fire Department was impressed to see the community rallying together to help solve some of the challenges that face us now.

We will keep you updated as the situation progresses, and we have a clearer picture of what needs to happen. The Fire Department is continuing their inspections for the next month. Meanwhile, Facilities is building several new studio spaces, and we hope to have information on the re-building plan for the vacated spaces soon.

Tim Laun has posted a schedule for this week to help organize studio changes, in light of this situation:

Dear Students and Faculty,

Things are coming into focus on how we will be handling studio changes this week. Our first priority is working with Thesis Students and displaced students to find them spaces. After that we will re-access the situation and determine what other studio changes can be made this week. All studio changes with current students must occur by Friday, January 22 so we can prepare and be ready for new students who arrive on Monday, January 25. Thanks for your patience as we work through this process.
