INEQUALITY REEXAMINED: SCULPTURE BY ABRAHAM CRUZVILLEGAS

June 3, 2010

INEQUALITY REEXAMINED. SCULPTURE BY ABRAHAM CRUZVILLEGAS ACE Curatorial Collective, Hunter College Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Gallery South-West Corner 68th St. and Lexington Ave. One view June 25, 2010 – September 4, 2010 24/7

“They have skate boards as a base.

None of the wooden pieces is attached, screwed or glued, they’re just in equilibrium.

Please find skate boards randomly, they must be ordinary things;

then find the potato, ginger and/or chayote randomly as well.”

The ACE curatorial collective of Hunter College presents Inequality Reexamined. Summer 2010, an exhibition of sculptures by the Mexico City-based artist Abraham Cruzvillegas. The project was conceived and is being created specifically for the street-facing windows of the Leubsdorf Gallery and the hot New York summer.

The sculptures in the window vitrine visualize and embrace the process of perishing. With them, Cruzvillegas explores the issues of transformation, self-construction, and the unfinished, open-ended nature of artwork and material objects. Complicating the viewers’ expectations, the sculptures will open different meanings of perishing and decay with an unusual, life-affirming, metamorphosis. Day one will differ from day two, which will differ from day sixty, and by the end of August the viewers will encounter a changed object.

The sculptures, composed of materials found randomly in different boroughs of New York City, absorb and express the rhythm of the street and people’s quotidian ways. By providing a set of simple instructions for assembling his work, Cruzvillegas emphasizes its constructed nature and dissolves its boundaries into the processes of scavenging, street-walking, and errand-running. Sticks, potatoes, skateboards, summer, heat, the virtuosity of equilibrium, and the intrigue of metamorphosis all reside in this project.

Abraham Cruzvillegas was born in Mexico City in 1968. He studied pedagogy at UNAM and participated in Gabriel Orozco’s workshop in 1987 – 1991. Since 1987, Cruzvillegas has exhibited internationally in such shows as the 25th Sao Paulo Biennale in 2002, 50th Venice Biennale in 2003, and Cali Biennale in Colombia in 2008. Since the 1990s, he has tutored, taught, and participated in conferences and workshops. In 2009, he held residency at the Wattis Institute of California College for the Arts in San Francisco. He is a recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, such as 2010 – 2011 DAAD in Berlin. His recent work includes autoconstrucción: The Film, which he presented at the Red Cat Arts Center in Los Angeles in 2009 and Kurimanzutto gallery in May, 2010, as a multi-media collaborative performance. Cruzvillegas is represented by the Kurimanzutto Gallery, Mexico City.

Hunter’s Quarry: Chris Knox

March 2, 2010

Chris Knox is a New Zealand independent artist who is probably better known by his association with the Tall Dwarves, a lo-fi DIY band. Knox’s solo music continues with the lo-fi production. His songs are often affecting and intelligent ruminations on mortality, sex, and society, produced with peculiar textures, a lyrical wit, and sincerity rarely expressed in contemporary music. His work  has had a great influence in the American indie scene– in particular Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Elephant Six Collective cite him as a major influence. In fact, Knox recently suffered a stroke and in a rare appearance, Jeff Magnum of Nuetral Milk Hotel, came out from his self-imposed retirement to contribute a track to the album.

Open Call for Open Studios Advertising Spring 2010

February 26, 2010

Call for submissions closes March 9th at 12 Midnight!

We are opening up the call for Open Studios advertising early this semester, so that everyone will have the opportunity to contribute to the process and fully vet the final image. We will first offer an opportunity for the submission of images, which will happen online. Next, there will be an online vote. The image chosen in that meeting will be used throughout our ad campaign. If you have any questions about submitting or the process, feel free to mail us mfa.hunter@gmail.com

Open Studios advertising represents Hunter College’s MFA program to the rest of the art world, so please produce submissions that you feel best reflects the commitment you, the students, have to your practice as artists.  As many of you know, this year we are largely focused on electronic advertising, but we will also be printing a limited number of post cards. No explicit nudity or language (we have to keep things to our advertiser’s standards). For web submission please use JPG format at 72 DPI and no larger than 600 pixels in any direction . All final images submitted must be able to accommodate printing. Printing requirements are:

Hunter’s Quarry: France Gall

February 11, 2010

This week I am continuing with the Franco-phile mood of the last post and bringing you the music of French pop songstress France Gall. Gall worked with the now legendary Serge Gainsbourg to produce many of the tracks on the album Baby Pop…. From Wikipedia:

At the beginning of 1966 Gall released Baby pop, another song written by Gainsbourg, the lyrics of which Gall once described as “brutal”, but whose dark undertones are not easily perceived when one hears the song as sung by the then 18 year-old girl. However, the undertones in her next hit song were not so easily missed, and caused a scandal when it was released. Gainsbourg deliberately filled the song Les Sucettes(“Lollipops”) with double-meanings and strong sexual innuendo. On the surface, the lyrics tell the innocent tale of a girl named Annie who enjoys lollipops. However, it is clear that Gainsbourg intentionally created the theme as a metaphor for oral sex. Although a big hit, the song sat in stark contrast to genuinely innocent songs on the same album such as Je me marie en blanc (“White Wedding”) and Ça me fait rire (“It makes me laugh”).
