We are pleased to announce that the Website is now open to sign up from all students! You can either do this from the front page of the website (http://www.huntermfaso.org) or you can go directly to this link:
http://huntermfaso.org/sign-up/
The page is password protected to prevent those not in the program from signing up. You should have received an email individually with the password. Remember the first rule of MFASO is… well shit, that joke was old before I finished typing it.
Anyhow, let us know if you have any questions, suggestions, or issues that you’ve noticed while using the site and we will do our best to resolve them for you. Please note that a known issue is the Avatar Image that you upload when you sign up- Firefox does not like the image cropper, so please use an alternative browser (Safari, Ineternet Explorer, etc).
As far as current features go: Users can now enter their own website and personal data (the profile requests some of this info on sign-up) — only your username, name, and email are mandatory to sign up. Once you have recieved the approval email you can log in to your account. From there you may create groups, events, or send messages to other users and groups.
The groups feature is a powerful tool that allows multiple people to coordinate and develop discussions. Each group comes enabled with its own Forum to allow for group discussion and organization. It is our hope that this feature will be used to relieve some of the clutter from the list-serv, but also to organize and promote our various collectives.
If you have any questions regarding these features please contact Joshua Johnson via email at joshua@joshuaj.net or contact the Admin through the website. Thanks and remember, there is a MFASO meeting on the second floor tonight at 7:30!

You may have noticed that we are inaugurating a new lecture series called Meet the MA’s. Our first guest will be Miriam Katz, an editor of Art Forum and co-curator of One Minute More at the Kitchen.
This series is running two fold: not only is it a chance to meet and hear about fellow colleagues who are working in the NYC art world (while completing their graduate degree at Hunter in Art History) – it is also intended to provide an opportunity to network and collaborate. We will have a sign up sheet at the lecture: MFAs who are interested in having a studio visit with Miriam can register with their contact information. Over the next few months we will be staging other Meet the MA talks, where a variety of speakers will be presenting their work in curating, directing, writing and art making. Next semester we ask that those interested to participate (who have signed up after attending the lectures) to present work publicly for an open critique by these curators, directors, writers, activists and art administrators.
Hope to see you there!!!! Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information.

We are slowly moving towards opening website registration to the student body, and are hoping for a public release next month… meanwhile, I’ve fixed the link to the Welcome Packet (thanks Claire) and added a list of resources for sculpture and other supplies courtesy of Arrick Underhill, Hugh Walton, and the generous contribution of others. You can find that on the Resources Page. Thanks guys!

To confront impending regulations and restrictions at the 41st Building we are organizing a letter campaign in order for us, the student body, to state our needs and concerns on record and to demonstrate a formidable critical consensus. To make our voices heard, it is crucial that we communicate our needs, requirements, and concerns about safety as clearly and directly as possible to the administration. To make it easier for you, we have produced a draft letter on the MFASO homepage that may be sent as is, or modified if you wish to make additional points. We HIGHLY encourage everyone to visit the page and contribute their own unique viewpoint. These letters are sent directly to the administration involved and MFASO, so please be aware that what you are saying represents the student body. The letter form, which may be filled out online can be accessed here http://huntermfaso.org/letter-of-protest/ or through the link in the main menu of this website.
In your letters, please be very clear about your practical situation (jobs, responsibilities, family, etc.) and how, as a student of CUNY, you expect to have the opportunity to fulfill your educational requirements in a way that will accommodate your real life. It is important for thesis students, both past and upcoming, to weigh in on exactly how much time they need to get the job done, and how important the Thesis Exhibition is for you and our program. Tell them in no uncertain terms: WE WORK AROUND THE CLOCK. Don’t forget to mention your concerns of safety if the building becomes un-guarded in the night hours, and how you would be concerned about fires, electrical issues, or break-ins.
KEEP FIGHTING HUNTERS!

We’re pleased to announce the new officers for MFASO, 2009:
Emily Stoddart – President
Daniel Nelson – Vice President
Sharone Vendriger – Treasurer
Joshua Johnson – Technology Officer
We’re excited about our new roles and look forward to working with all of you in the coming months to prepare for another fantastic school year at Hunter.
However, first thing’s first:
The Trouble with Turnstiles!
We are having a meeting this coming TUESDAY JUNE 23 (Second Floor Crit Room) to discuss the impending turnstile and curfew restrictions that are scheduled to take place in August. We strongly encourage you to attend this meeting as we will be going over the layout of the proposal from the administration, the ideology of those involved, the ways in which this is being dealt with by the school, where we stand and how we can defend our rights and interests as students, etc. We will be organizing a letter-writing campaign as well as taking your suggestions to build a collective opposition to the issue. We need your personal experiences, reactions and ideas in order to facilitate a strong opposition – this can be done only with your help!!!
We are very committed to fighting this curfew and turnstile situation so please come out and give us your support.
Seriously, an 11pm curfew on the weekend?????????
